Recognize your strengths and skills

During your training and career, you’ve had to deal with adversity, and to adjust and adapt to many things. That experience means you can adapt again. With support and effort, you can reclaim parts of yourself that you may feel have been lost. You can also gain new skills and insights that can help you move forward in your life.

Recognizing your strengths and skills can help you to find new meaning and purpose in your life, build your confidence to reach out to old connections or make new ones. It can also help you to identify ways to approach your grief overall.

Identify your skills

Think back to what you have accomplished in your career. What skills did you have when you joined up, what have you acquired throughout your career? It is easy to forget all the ways you have grown and the skills you’ve gained since you joined. These may be skills you acquired through education, training, by observing others, through ongoing practice, or by being mentored. Consider the skills you have developed and those you had before you joined and recognize that these are assets you have as you move forward with the next chapter in your life.

Identify your strengths

You bring discipline, determination, problem-solving, a strong work ethic, and teamwork to new situations, challenges and relationships. Consider the challenges you have confronted, the successes you have had, and everything you’ve learned that you can bring forward. You may be surprised at the strength you have developed, the insights about yourself you have discovered along the way.

Dealing with adversity

You’ve faced a great deal of adversity throughout your career. The discipline and determination that was needed to carry on will serve you well in facing your grief. Think back to another time in your life when things were tough and consider what you did to help yourself. Sometimes we learn very quickly from our mistakes, but we can also remind ourselves and reinforce what worked well in the past.

You might find it helpful to think about where you get your strength from – now and in the past and lean into that.
