Support from family

What a family can do is be supportive. Having family just say, “I love you,” and positive, encouraging things, like “I believe you” is helpful. I Love you, I’m here for you and I believe you. Those things really matter.” There is so much shame that comes with this, just knowing people I love still love me and have my back. There are times it didn’t matter if military had my back or not, knowing my family cared and wouldn’t give up on me. - Military Veteran

There is nothing quite like the love and support of family to get through even the most difficult times. If you are a partner or family member of someone who has experienced sexual trauma, below are some ways you can be supportive.

What family can do

  • Say “I believe you,” “I love you,” “I’m here for you.”
  • Reinforce they are not to blame for what happened.
  • Ask what they need. This may be different at different times. Do they need a shoulder to cry on? Someone to listen while they talk? Do they need distraction like watching a movie or playing a game? Do they need practical help with domestic or other chores?
  • Give them as much choice and control as possible.
  • Be there for them in the long run.
  • Recognize that there will be ups and downs and healing will be more like a rollercoaster than climbing a hill.
  • Validate their feelings.

Don’t hesitate to get professional help for yourself or your family. You are all impacted by this.
