Conclusion

There are many ways you may have transitioned out of your service. It may have been carefully planned by you or sudden and unexpected. You may have been discharged when it was not your choice.

The loss of community and camaraderie, the disappearance of organizational structure, and no longer having a sense of purpose and meaning are profound losses that Veterans may experience. For some, the feelings of loss start to build as retirement draws near; for others, it is months or sometimes years after retirement. When the decision to move to civilian life is not your choice, the transition can be more difficult.

It is important to acknowledge your losses and seek support. If you feel “stuck”, reach out for professional help. Remember that you are not alone, and resources are available.
