Conclusion

Leaving the military or RCMP is a big life change—for Veterans and for their families. It can bring up feelings of loss, confusion, and grief, even when retirement is planned. Veterans may feel like they’ve lost their identity, purpose, structure, or close relationships. They may have experienced trauma that is impacting their life and their family.

Families may feel unsure of their new roles and what the future holds. Sometimes, challenges don’t appear right away and may show up months or even years later.

It is helpful to work out ways for the Veteran and family to reconnect with each other and to share responsibilities. Talking openly, supporting one another, and learning about what to expect can help couples and families move forward. Remember that every person and situation is unique. What works for one Veteran and family may not work for others and may change over time.
